Before the Sun, They Rise!

Long before the first guests arrived, before the music played, before the certificates were handed out, and before the celebrations began, these women were already at work.

While most of us were still asleep, fires were being lit. Pots were being stirred. Meals were being prepared. Not for themselves, but for others.

At the end of 2025, Sawubona Project celebrated the graduation of more than 200 participants from our life skills and pre-employment programs. It was a day of joy, achievement, and hope. But behind every successful celebration are people whose names may never appear on a program, whose work often goes unnoticed, yet whose contribution is essential.

These women are those heroes.

With skill, determination, and laughter, they transformed simple ingredients into a feast that would bring together students, families, facilitators, and community members. They cooked over open fires, worked side by side, encouraged one another, and carried the responsibility of feeding hundreds with remarkable grace.

What strikes us most is not simply the food they prepared. It is the spirit in which they prepared it.

There was pride in their work.

There was joy in their service.

There was dignity in every task.

At Sawubona Project, we often speak about empowerment, opportunity, and community transformation. Sometimes those words are found in a classroom. Sometimes they are found in a life skills session. And sometimes they are found standing around a fire before sunrise, stirring a pot large enough to feed a village.

Their story also reflects something we deeply believe at Pie Boyz.

Every pie we sell, every cookie we bake, every cinnamon bun we roll is ultimately about people. Food has a unique way of bringing people together, creating opportunity, building confidence, and strengthening community. The same hands that prepare meals for a graduation celebration are the same hands capable of building businesses, leading families, and shaping the future of their communities.

These women remind us that transformation rarely begins on a stage.

It begins quietly.

Before the applause.

Before the recognition.

Before the sun.

And because they rose early to serve others, more than 200 graduates were able to celebrate a milestone that day with full hearts and full plates.
